Cayman Islands - Grand Cayman Island - George Town

April 2022

In route from Panama to Grand Cayman Island Gary caught a lovely Wahoo which we enjoyed thoroughly.  After a 6 day passage we arrived in Grand Cayman Island on my birthday.  We had both been tested for Covid previous to our departure in Panama.  Upon arrival, as part of our clearing in, we had to take a special taxi to the testing facility and get tested again for Covid.    We are happy that some countries are open for travel, traveling during covid is a little costly with the tests and cumbersome procedures.

Grand Cayman reminded me of South Florida, beautiful beaches, great sunsets and, well, lots of development.  We did 4 dives, some had canyons which we swam through and it was a blast.   The dive sites were in a conservation area so the fish are protected from hunting.   During our dive we were constantly followed and approached by very ‘curious’ snappers.   In areas that hunt for snapper they are very elusive and shy away from divers as all life wants to persist.

Our anchorage in Georgetown had poor protection and there was a strong Caribbean swell coming in so we didn’t get much sleep. After completing our diving we sailed to the other side of the island for some protection from the swell and high winds that were forecasted.   We sheltered in a marina for a couple days while the blow was happening.  Gary worked on boat projects while the winds howled and we enjoyed the respite from the angry sea.
