New Guinea- Cenderawasih Bay- Whale Sharks

We left civilization (Sorong) and it took us 6 days to get to Cenderawasih bay, the home of the gentle giants, the largest fish in the sea, the beautiful and elegant Whale Sharks. Getting here and finding the whale sharks was truly an adventure. Take a look at our sailing tracks to see how much back and forth to the fishing platforms we did for 2 days in search of these enormous filter feeders. Cenderawasih bay was very deep, too deep to anchor so we literally left our yacht afloat, jumped in our dinghy to motor over to the fishing platforms to investigate if there were any whales sharks to be seen. On day two our last attempt I had truly given up, but low and behold we got lucky, real lucky 3 whales sharks. Based upon their size we had 2 very young and an older whale shark that we had the privilege to swim with. Whale sharks can get up to 40 feet/12 meters long, weigh up 20 tons, there lifespan is somewhere between 70 – 100 years old. Sexual maturity is reached at 30

It is time to Sail Away...

Aloha friends, Nature, sailing, and travel are some of my passions in life. The right opportunity has manifested for me so I am going for it and taking a work-break to explore the Pacific Ocean. My plans are to fly to Tonga, a Polynesian island in the South Pacific – a mere 21 hours of flying, 4 planes and 3 days to get to there! I will be meeting Gary in Tonga. He graciously sailed there from Florida over the last 7 months. Gary is in his 2 year of circumnavigating and has over 22,000 miles of experience on his boat Illimitè. This is a beautiful 45-foot Allures sailboat built in Cherbourg, France. By the way, the name Illimitè is French and means ‘a ticket that allows unlimited travel’ …. And guess who loves to travel?? My journey starts on August 15 th and will be around 1,500 nautical miles, exploring the continent of Oceania. We will spend several weeks sailing Tonga a nation of 170 islands. Australia- Mission Beach

We rode bikes up and down the beach, through the woods, up the hills and hiked in the rain forest in search of the super impressive Cassowary bird. In appearance they look similar to an EMU but they are heavier and have impressive feather colors, helmet and neck wattle. These tall (5'7") flightless birds are armed with a 4 inch dagger in their foot, best not to mess with them or you will get hurt! Females are slightly larger than the male, and the male takes on the role as sole care giver of eggs and their young. We have heard it is quite a scene at rush hour in Mission Beach when Daddy cassowary's walks across the highway with their chicks en-tow to find more food. The Cassowary is a KEYSTONE species (like gators that create gator holes in the Everglades). As a keystone species the important task they complete is spreading a huge diversity (over 70) of trees that creates the rain forest.
