What a difference a year makes. Last year we left from Guam rested and
anxious to get on our way to Alaska, 6 weeks, 4 gales and 4,800 nautical miles
later we made it to Kodiak. During this
difficult passage, we had encountered high winds, big seas and lots of
fog. There was not much to see for 6
weeks, we didn’t see any sea birds or ships (one ship on AIS).
This year we left unrested (exhausted from several nights of
not getting a full night of sleep). We started off sailing into the wind for
several days, so it added to our sleep deprivation. During our passage we observed birds, other
ships and floating trash pretty much every day. We had only 1-2 days of fog. We
were able to sail around the gales and make it safely to Kodiak in 21 days 2,300
nautical miles. Similar passages but extremely different as
far as drama and intensity. Happy for
the less drama and shorter duration passage.
