USA- Alaska- Afognak- Kitoi Bay

We went to Kitoi bay in hopes of glimpsing a Kodiak bear from afar.   Kodiak bears are a unique subspecies of the grizzly bear; they live exclusively in the Kodiak Archipelago and have been separated from other bears for over 12,000 years.  Males can weigh up to 1,500 lbs., standing at 10 foot tall they are considered as large; if not larger than Polar Bears.  Unlike Polar bears, Kodiak bears are not known for eating people, their diet is of grass, plants, salmon, and berries.

We went ashore and were kindly greeted by the Kitoi Bay Hatchery Manager and Assistant manager.  We got a tour of the whole facility and learned how salmon hatcheries operate.    That evening before going to bed I spied a bear walking on the shore, he was only out of the forest for a little bit but we were able to get a photo! Snap!! So excited to check this species off our list.
