Going Going Gone Guam...
We had a 4 day sail to
Guam from Chuuk. We arrived on March 4, at that time there were no cases
of Covid-19 (of course not test kits available either). Guam is a popular
destination for Koreans, Japanese and Chinese tourists. Before we arrived
the local government in Guam cancelled all incoming flights from these
countries that had Covid-19 cases. We witnessed the downtown beach area
full of designer stores and fancy restaurants that were empty at that
time, a ghost town.
We had plans to stay in
Guam for one week, those plans changed, they changed again, then they changed
again, again, and again. We are now sitting tight, sheltering in
place on anchor near shore. On March 20th the local government required
shutdown on all non-essential businesses (except Grocery, Drug Stores,
Healthcare and Restaurant Take Out only). Our latest sail schedule
including skipping our stops to Saipan
& Japan. We will sail directly to
Alaska from Guam, a lengthy, challenging and tough 6 week passage.
We are super thrilled to
be fortunate to be in a US territory with plans to sail back to North America.
We have friends who like us are sailing around
the world. The Covid-19 pandemic has prevented them
from sailing the next country and in several cases the country that they are in
refuses to let them ashore (even for provisioning & fuel). Until
our boat parts arrive we will sit here tight for the next 30 days.
