One of my dreams was to have children and sail around the world. I am fortunate now to get the opportunity to sail with Gary, minus the children. In Indonesia there are lots of small islands with large populations of kids, and well these kids are friendly and very curious.
Most island kids have access to wooden outrigger canoes that they can paddle. When we anchor it is not too long after we drop our anchor that a flotilla of kids paddle out to our yacht. Unlike Malaysia, they do not teach English in school and most Indonesians do not speak English. The visits are usually forced as they come up to our sailboat and start climbing aboard, we are defenseless against these single and double digit aged kids. Once on board they like to look around and they all want to take photo's with us. The bad news is these kids have nothing to do and no reason to leave. A visit can last hours, and when we translate goodbye and leave, the message never gets across.
