Sandakan the former capital of British Borneo, was razed to the ground during WWII. After the war a roaring timber trade blossomed here, with wood from Borneo exported all over the world. Today the palm-oil industry is the main economy. There are several places for Eco tourism and we saw a wealth of wildlife and WWII memorials. The famous American Author Agnes Newton Keith lived here and wrote several novels about colonial living in Borneo (Land Below the Wind).
